We are thrilled to be partnering with Hayman’s Gin to bring some unique experiences to our bar. Our hotel has always collaborated with iconic drinks brands and this year is no exception. Ahead of some exciting launches, we wanted to explore the origins of London Dry Gin and the rich tapestry of culture that comes together and gives us such an iconic drink.

The History of London Dry Gin

London Dry Gin, an iconic spirit synonymous with elegance and complexity, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. Its journey from a rough and rudimentary concoction to a globally celebrated drink is as intriguing as the flavors it imparts.

Gin’s story begins in the Netherlands with a spirit known as “genever,” a juniper-flavored liquor used primarily for medicinal purposes. British soldiers, who encountered genever during the Eighty Years’ War, brought it back to England, where it quickly gained popularity. The gin craze of the 18th century saw the spirit evolve, albeit in an often unrefined form, with many low-quality versions flooding the market.

It was in response to this chaos that London Dry Gin emerged. The term “London Dry” does not refer to the gin being produced in London but rather to a specific method of production. The process involves redistilling a high-proof spirit with a careful selection of botanicals, the most essential of which is juniper. Unlike other types of gin, London Dry Gin is characterized by its strict production standards—no artificial flavours or colours are permitted, and the botanicals must be added during distillation rather than afterward. This meticulous approach ensures a crisp, clean, and balanced spirit, celebrated for its versatility in cocktails.

Throughout its history, London Dry Gin has been associated with some of the world’s most iconic cocktails, including the Martini and the Gin and Tonic. The gin and tonic, in particular, became a symbol of British colonial life, with quinine-rich tonic water being used to ward off malaria in tropical climates. The drink’s refreshing simplicity belies the depth of flavor that a quality London Dry Gin can bring, making it a timeless favorite.

Today, gin enthusiasts can explore a myriad of craft distilleries and gin bars that pay homage to this storied spirit. One such haven for gin lovers is The Athenaeum Hotel in Mayfair, London. Steeped in history and luxury, The Athenaeum offers an exceptional experience for discerning guests.
