Whether you’re in London all the time or just visiting, nothing helps celebrate Mother’s Day more in the city than doing something you don’t usually do.
Start the day off with a little wow factor by treating your Mum to a bird’s eye view over London. This can be done at The View from the Shard. At 310 metres tall, The Shard is the tallest building in the UK and in the whole of the European Union too. With far reaching views across the city and the opportunity to have a toast with a glass of bubbles, this is one way to make mothers feel really special.
Other options for magnificent London views include a journey on the city’s iconic enclosed Ferris wheel at the London Eye or a visit to the viewing level at the Tate Modern, complete with its 360ᵒ views. For other amazing city outlooks seen from the great outdoors, keen walkers should head up Primrose Hill or to Greenwich Park, where you can also stand on the meridian line at the Royal Observatory.
After treating the special lady in your life to amazing sights in the morning, indulge the taste buds during the afternoon.
Treat your mother to a delightful 3-course lunch at Galvin at The Athenaeum. Our Executive Chef has lovingly created a special Mother’s Day menu featuring delicious seasonal cuisine for just 35.00 per person, plus, children aged 10 or under eat for free from our Children’s menu.
Or, opt for our Royal Afternoon Tea. Choosing from our range of artisan teas – ranging from Royal English Breakfast to the more exotic Sencha Fukuyja – is just the beginning of this culinary experience. Sandwiches include roast beef and horseradish, English cucumber and cream cheese, and egg drumkilbo – the late Queen Mother’s personal favourite. Sweet treats come in the form of fairy cakes with butter cream, blueberry and Eton mess tart and Scottish shortbread. Scones with house-made preserves and a variety of cakes complete the picture.
After all that, you may well need a stroll. Just across the road from The Athenaeum is Green Park – one of the Royal Parks that can add yet another regal touch to your Mother’s Day afternoon. Take in the various monuments, fountains and statues, and feel refreshed in the wide green spaces. You could even continue with a short walk further on to Buckingham Palace.
London’s ‘Theatreland’ or West End is the only way to round off a perfect Mother’s Day in the city. These theatre productions and musicals give that feel-good factor hard to find anywhere else. There are plenty of Mum-friendly shows on at the moment too. All or Nothing is about rhythm ‘n’ blues in London in 1965, and finishes its run at the Arts Theatre this Mother’s Day. Alternatively, The Play That Goes Wrong is an Olivier Award winning comedy production full of laughs for all ages.
London’s amazing sights, culinary magnificence and some of the best theatrical skills in the world, this Mother’s Day in London couldn’t be more thrilling. We challenge you to find a Mum who isn’t impressed with that!
