Lobby art

14th September 2018

Campbell La Pun was born in New Zealand, raised in Australia and lives in Tokyo, Japan. Inspired by the blend of western and eastern cultures, La Pun’s vivid artworks tend to bring together pop art, well-known logos and the vibrant colours known from Japanese cartoons and branding.

In particular, La Pun enjoys transforming luxury brands and fashion icons into fun depictions through his art. Predominantly using stencils and spray paint to form his creations, he brings together inspiration from pop art and street art, within the context of modern culture and contemporary trends.

La Pun’s fascination with spray paint in particular has made its way into his artworks too. Dom Spray Pop Bubble #2 – the artwork in the lobby at The Athenaeum – is just one of a series of work from La Pun’s Dom Pérignon Collection. In this collection, there are different versions of the Dom Pérignon spray can motif, depicted in an array of neon colours and with coloured paint drizzling down the bottle-spray-can hybrid. There’s even an image of the Dom Pérignon branding depicted on a classic Coca Cola bottle. Dom Spray Pop Bubble #2 plays on the classic branding of Dom Pérignon, but with a whimsical drizzle of purple paint adding a sense of La Pun’s spirit and fun.

Campbell La Pun’s love of the spray can as both as a vessel for his paint and a subject for his art is an engaging way for the artist to reveal something of himself to his audience. As a preferred material for his art, La Pun enjoys the juxtaposition of the incredibly fragile stencils he creates painstakingly by hand, with the spray paint that comes out “after a furious shake and push of a nozzle.”

La Pun’s spray paint passion within his art extends beyond the Dom Pérignon collection. In his other collections,  Chanel No 5, Hermès, Lucky Strike and Campbell’s soup have all been depicted as spray paints too!

Campbell La Pun has captured the imagination of art fans across the world. With gallery affiliations with the likes of Saatchi Art, celebrity collectors including Mel B and film producer Cydney Bernard, and a place in corporate and private collections globally, his play on luxury, branding and pop culture is truly compelling.
