Get outdoors

London’s parks and outdoor spaces come alive with festivals, music and performance arts during the summer. Music festivals range from big-name musicians performing at British Summer Time in Hyde Park, to the chilled-out Citadel Festival – full of comedy, workshops and great food.

Watch open-air theatre performances in gorgeous surroundings, such as the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre or the River Stage Festival.

Outdoor cinema is all the rage in London too – try The Nomad Cinema in various Royal Parks, Film4 at Somerset House or Luna Cinema in a range of stunning London locations. The Royal Opera House has also organised live open-air screenings of La bohème and Don Giovanni in various London locations this summer, including Trafalgar Square.

For those who love to get a little beach time in during the summer, London has a surprising number of urban beaches to take advantage of. Try the Southbank Centre Beach, Neverland at Fulham Beach Club and London’s Royal Docks beach – to name but a few. For swimming, London has a choice of outdoor lidos and swimming pools too – the Hampstead Heath Swimming Ponds, Serpentine Lido in Hyde Park and London Fields Lido are some of the most popular.

Summer in London is also perfect for picnics in the Royal Parks. At The Athenaeum, we’re serving indulgent picnic baskets ideal for taking to Green Park, located opposite the hotel. Incorporating all the British favourites from a traditional afternoon tea, our picnics offer an experience like an al fresco afternoon tea in the park.

A little bit of everything else

As well as making the most of being outdoors this summer in London, there’s a whole range of other events and typical London pastimes going on.

Art fans should head over to Masterpiece London 2018 (27 June to 4 July) at Royal Hospital Chelsea. This art fair has works of art on display by the likes of Picasso and Monet, with a range of new exhibitors too.

The first two weeks of July also sees the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships come to town. Matches are shown throughout the city – perfect for soaking up a wonderful British atmosphere. Or why not visit us at Galvin at The Athenaeum and indulge in a glass of Pimm’s with some traditional strawberries and cream.

Families should make the most of Kids Week at London’s West End theatres this summer too. Throughout the whole of August, this promotion means children under the age of 16 can go to selected theatre performances free of charge when accompanied by a paying adult. For children who love dinosaurs, this summer is a real treat too. The Dinosaur World Live interactive theatre will be in Regent’s Park, while the Walking with Dinosaurs show will be at the O2 Arena.

And finally, summer in London is also a time when the Queen opens the doors to Buckingham Palace while she’s elsewhere on her holidays. So if you’ve ever been curious about the Queen’s official London residence, now is the time to have a royal wander around.

One thing is for sure – you won’t be bored this summer in London!
