Adding a touch of glamour to the lobby at The Athenaeum are works of art by Louis-Nicolas Darbon. Inspired by Chanel, Hermès and the many other fashion brands he’s worked with, we take a closer look at the story behind this globally-renowned artist.
With parental heritage from India, South Africa and the Indian Ocean island of Réunion, an upbringing in Paris and studies that took him to New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo, it’s no wonder Louis-Nicolas Darbon is an artist with a thing or two to say.
A keen artist as soon as he was able to hold a paintbrush, Louis-Nicolas Darbon went on to collaborate with many of the world’s famous fashion houses including Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin, Net-a-Porter and Louis Vuitton. Working on bespoke illustrations and innovative campaigns too, Louis-Nicolas Darbon has also collaborated with the likes of Adidas, Bentley, Montblanc, Remy Martin and Paco Rabane.
In the art world, he continues to be represented by galleries worldwide and has exhibited nationally and internationally, with solo shows in the UK, US, France, Switzerland, Japan and Morocco.
The worlds of fashion and art have always collided for the artist. Louis-Nicolas Darbon is especially known for his take on well-known luxury brand logos and his artworks inspired by fashion. The works we have on display in the lobby at The Athenaeum perfectly capture the artist’s fresh and playful look at the world of fashion.
One of the artist’s iconic pieces taking pride of place in our lobby is CHANEL 31 Rue Chambon. Introducing a spirited twist to the iconic Chanel No5 perfume bottle, Louis-Nicolas Darbon has introduced the impression of dripping luminous pink and green paint. Bright, upbeat and full of impact, the artist’s sense of fun is apparent.
The second Louis-Nicolas Darbon piece in our lobby is Chanel meets Hermès. Another convivial work of art full of sophistication, the artist blends brands in a depiction of both fashion houses on a perfume bottle. With a radiant orange background, it’s a bold piece that fashion and art lovers think of as being both energetic and genuinely original.
We love the fact that Louis-Nicolas Darbon is a London local nowadays too, with a studio in Notting Hill. Sharing the great city we call ‘home’, we can’t wait to see what the artist has coming up next.
