As spring starts to make an appearance in London, events, activities and celebrations in the city kick up a gear too. Here’s our guide of the top five things to do in London this March.
On Saturday 17 March, London turns green as the city’s Irish community – and pretty much everyone else too – comes together to celebrate the patron Saint of Ireland. The festivities in London take place throughout the whole weekend, culminating in the St Patrick’s Day Parade on 18 March. Lavish floats, performers and marching bands make their way along Piccadilly from around midday. Elsewhere, expect Irish pubs to be full of fun and plenty of Guinness.
Fans of the theatre, art and design will be in heaven in the National Theatre throughout March. A free exhibition in the theatre’s Wolfson Gallery highlights poster design from 1963 to the present day. As well as posters, the exhibition includes interviews with past and present art directors and creative directors for the theatre, who look at the changes in design over the course of 50+ years.
Pubs have been synonymous with London life for decades, while the craft beer scene in the city is currently a hot trend. These come together from 12 to 18 March during London Beer Week. The week involves brewery and taproom tours, masterclasses and special events in venues across the city. The Beer Edit is the culmination of the festival, where there will be food, music and plenty of beers from up-and-coming craft brewers to taste.
Head over to the Science Museum throughout March for a last glimpse at this insightful exhibition about India’s global influence in terms of science and technology. Featuring a 5000-year timeline of scientific breakthroughs in India, and incredible photographs dating back from 1857, this is an exhibition not to be missed by those interested in global affairs, culture and science. A special event for the exhibition also takes place on 23 March, when the Mercury Prize winning composer Talvin Singh performs a musical response to the photography part of the exhibition.
As spring arrives in the city, London’s Royal Parks take on a new lease of life. Spring flowers start to pop up and park walks become more relaxed in the milder weather. The parks also run a calendar of truly original events that are often one-off occurrences. On 24 March in Hyde Park, a survival skills workshop is taking place. This is a time to learn all about wild food and foraging in the park, which may come as a surprise to many, given the park’s location in the heart of a global city! Booking in advance is necessary.
