The open plan lounge space of Residences at The Athenaeum. This is a luxury serviced apartment in London.

30th January 2025

Steeped in history and brimming with quintessentially British charm, The Athenaeum is more than just a luxury hotel in Mayfair—it’s a living tribute to Britain’s rich heritage. From its iconic address to its thoughtful nods to British culture, every detail of The Athenaeum tells a story that celebrates the traditions, craftsmanship, and resilience that define the nation.

A Storied History: Churchill’s Connection

The Athenaeum’s walls have witnessed history in the making. During World War II, Down Street Station, located just steps from the hotel, served as a secret bunker for Winston Churchill and his War Cabinet during the Blitz. When air raids forced Churchill underground, he would seek respite in the Athenaeum Club, housed in the same building where The Athenaeum Hotel now stands. The bar—still in its original location—was where Churchill famously sipped his preferred drinks, offering a moment of calm amidst the chaos of war.

Today, this piece of history remains alive within the hotel. Though tours of Down Street Station are currently paused, the legacy endures, and guests at The Athenaeum can still feel the echoes of its illustrious past.

A Celebration of British Craftsmanship

The Athenaeum pays homage to Britain’s legacy of craftsmanship and innovation through carefully selected details:

Molton Brown Toiletries

A true icon of British luxury, Molton Brown’s bath and body products have been crafted in England since 1971. Guests can indulge in their signature scents and formulations, adding an extra layer of opulence to their stay.

Tregothnan Tea

Served as part of our celebrated afternoon tea experience, Tregothnan Tea is grown on Tregothnan Estate in Cornwall, the first and only English tea plantation. Every sip offers a taste of Britain’s verdant countryside and centuries-old tea tradition.

Gusbourne English Wine

Complementing our menu at 116 at The Athenaeum, Gusbourne’s award-winning sparkling wines are a testament to Britain’s burgeoning viticulture. Grown in the rolling hills of Kent and Sussex, these wines embody the elegance and complexity of English winemaking.

Afternoon Tea: A Quintessential Tradition

No visit to The Athenaeum would be complete without indulging in our afternoon tea. Served in the heart of Mayfair, this time-honored tradition has been reimagined with a modern twist. Freshly baked scones, delicate finger sandwiches, and delectable pastries are paired with Tregothnan Tea or a glass of Gusbourne sparkling wine for an experience that is both indulgent and uniquely British.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply savoring a leisurely afternoon, our tea experience offers a moment of serenity and indulgence, surrounded by the timeless elegance of The Athenaeum.

A Home for Heritage and Hospitality

The Athenaeum owes its name to its origins as a library for artifacts collected by its original owner, an MP named Mr. Hope. By opening the building to the public, Mr. Hope created a space where knowledge, culture, and art could be shared. This ethos of openness and warmth continues to define The Athenaeum today, welcoming guests from around the world to experience the very best of British hospitality.

Discover The Athenaeum’s Timeless Legacy

From its historic connections to Churchill to its celebration of British artisanship, The Athenaeum offers a unique blend of heritage and contemporary luxury. Whether you’re sipping tea steeped in Cornish tradition, toasting with English sparkling wine, or simply soaking in the ambiance of its storied bar, every moment at The Athenaeum is an ode to Britain’s past and present.

Experience the legacy for yourself. Book your stay today and become part of The Athenaeum’s ongoing story.
