There are few experiences more quintessentially British than the pub. The streets of Central London are bursting with them; on almost every corner you turn lies a landlord waiting to pull you a pint. Being based in Mayfair, one of London’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, we have an abundance of luxury pubs on our doorstep, so we have come up with two pub routes to help quench your thirst on your next visit.

Route 1: Mayfair

Stop 1: The Footman, Charles Street

Our first stop in the tour of London’s luxury pubs is The Footman, a few streets away from The Athenaeum, taking just 9 minutes to walk to. Originally called The Running Horse, the pub has been in place since 1749, when it was visited by the footmen who were in service to the households of Mayfair. They would run ahead of their master’s coaches, pay tolls in advance and clear a safe passage ahead. When footmen were no longer in demand, one bought the pub and named it after himself. The pub then became well known for being the best source of gossip!

Stop 2: The Guinea Grill, Bruton Street

A leisurely 5 minute walk from The Footman takes you to The Guinea Grill, our second stop and a Mayfair institution. Steeped in history, there has been a pub on this site since 1423, and it has been named The Guinea since 1675. The current landlords, Youngs, have been at the helm since 1888. Expect British classics and locally sourced steak as well as an extensive wine list and Youngs ales.

Stop 3: The Punchbowl, Farm Street

Last but by no means least is The Punchbowl. Walk for 6 minutes to Farm Street for a drink at another of Mayfair’s oldest pubs, previously owned by Guy Ritchie. Sip on real local ales or fine single malt scotch in a pub that has been serving Mayfair’s high society since 1729. From here you’re just a 9 minute stroll back to the comfort of your room, and if you fancy it, a final drink in The View.

Route 2: Belgravia

Stop 1: The Grenadier, Wilton Row

Our second route explores Belgravia. Just next door to Mayfair, it’s another elite neighbourhood with some historic, luxury pubs to discover. Turn right from The Athenaeum and a 13 minute walk will take you to stop number 1, The Grenadier. This building became a pub in 1818, and rumour has it, the Duke of Wellington was a visitor from time to time. To this day, it’s a hit with celebrities, with Madonna holding a post-gig party here.

Stop 2: Thomas Cubitt, Elizabeth Street

A 15 minute walk from The Grenadier, Thomas Cubitt is a real favourite with locals! It tops our list when it comes to its setting, located on the picturesque Elizabeth Street, one of the most Instagrammable streets in London. Swap your pint for a glass of wine here as there’s an impressive list and their Coravin system means you can try a selection of their finest by the glass.

Stop 3: The Orange, Pimlico Road

Our final spot in Belgravia is just a further 6 minute walk to Pimlico Road, a stone’s throw from the iconic Sloane Square. This beautiful building was once a brewery and we love the grand and traditional features, buzzy atmosphere and open fireplaces.
